Summit Convair 580

Company Profile

Summit was conceived as an air cargo transportation company in 1966, under the name Del/Air Cargo Airlines. It flew one single-engine Cessna 172 between Millville, New Jersey and its Delaware base.

By 1970, the fledgling company had acquired several Cessna 206s and a twin engine Beech 18. Later, Sky vans were purchased and soon became the backbone of the fleet. The Company moved its headquarters to Philadelphia.

In 1973, the Company signed interline agreements with major certificated carriers, a significant milestone in its history that propelled it into international air freight service. In 1974, Del/Air changed its name to Summit Airlines to reflect this new growth.

Summit subsequently purchased five Convair 580s, leased Electra and DC-9 aircraft, and developed an integrated, bimodal cargo transportation system utilizing trucks as well as aircraft. In 1982, it inaugurated its Road Feeder Service designed for price sensitive intercity shipments.

In 1983, the E. F. Hutton Group, Inc. purchased a majority interest in Summit Airlines.
